APPEAL FOR PAKISTAN FLOOD RELIEF -

Canadian Government Matching Individual Donations to PWS&D

Severe monsoon rains and widespread flooding in Pakistan have affected the homes and livelihoods of over 20 million people—more than the Tsunami, Kashmir earthquake and Haiti earthquake combined. With a fifth of the country under water, millions of people are at risk for cholera and struggle for basic survival.

PWS&D RESPONDS

Presbyterian World Service & Development is assisting flood victims through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and the Action by Churches Together Alliance to provide food, shelter, emergency supplies and medical care for over 150,000 of the most affected people in the provinces of Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North West Frontier Province and Swat Valley).

CANADIAN GOVERNMENT MATCHING DONATIONS

The Canadian International Development Agency is matching donations from individual Canadians from August 2 – September 12, 2010.

For congregations sending PWS&D one cheque for the sum of all the donations they have collected for Pakistan Flood Relief, please include a letter identifying the names and amounts of individual donations that make up the total. This will ensure these funds are eligible for matching in the government’s Pakistan Floods Relief Fund.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

The people of Pakistan need your prayers and financial support to recover and rebuild from this disaster. You can make a donation to PWS&D by calling 1-800-619-7301 ext. 291, donating online, through your church or mailing a cheque to the office. Please mark all donations “Pakistan Flood Relief.”

In response to the devastating destruction caused by Pakistan’s floods, the Canadian Government will be matching donations made by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charitable organizations – including PWS&D – for flood relief efforts from August 2 until September 12, 2010.

“The Government of Canada will use the Pakistan Floods Relief Fund to provide assistance through experienced Canadian and international humanitarian and development organizations with significant in-country capacity, as per established channels and procedures” (CIDA press release).
Congregations can send PWS&D one cheque for the sum of all the donations they have collected for Pakistan flood relief, along with a letter identifying the names and amounts of the individual donations that make up the total. As reports from our partners come in, the extent of the disaster is far beyond what was originally thought.
According to the UN, an estimated 14 million people have been affected by the floods, which is more people than the Tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake and the Haiti earthquake combined.
The ACT Alliance, with support from PWS&D, is seeking to provide over 130,000 people with basic essential items such as food packages, shelter materials and household items. PWS&D is also leading a food assistance program through CFGB and the generous support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Further details on these programs are available on our website (www.presbyterian.ca/pwsd) and note the pictures at the back.

Joy and David MacIntyre (family as well) as they return from Warsaw, Poland. Pray for improvement for David after experiencing the CCSVI treatment.

Those of ill health especially Bobby Brown, Charlie Dickieson (son of Wayne and Flora) and Rick Vail.

Those continuing recovery especially Jean MacRae, Helen Barlow, Gordon and Louise Weeks; Hazel MacLeod

Those in hospital especially Marlene Cummings and Ida Joostema.

Those that mourn especially Rick Hillier and family in the death of Rick’s mom, Muriel Hillier.

Building Futures of Hope Around the World

For more than 60 years, our church has been actively working to support people around the world affected by poverty, emergencies and injustice through Presbyterian World Service & Development. Over the last year, the generous support of Presbyterians in Canada has helped raise an incredible $1.5 million for relief work in Haiti, install 9 shallow wells in northern Tanzania, provide 8,000 mothers in Malawi with antenatal care, decrease malnutrition among hundreds of poor families in Nicaragua and send over 1,300 girls to school in Afghanistan. Thank you for sharing in these achievements.

Presbyterian World Service & Development is the development and relief agency of The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
